Atleta estadounidense. Ganó consecutivamente cuatro campeonatos nacionales juveniles de heptatlón y descolló en los equipos de baloncesto y atletismo de la UCLA. En 1986 se convirtió en la primera mujer en conseguir 7.000 puntos en el heptatlón. Quebró en seis ocasiones esa marca, y en cuatro de ellas estableció nuevos récords mundiales. Obtuvo medalla de oro en el heptatlón de los Juegos Olímpicos de 1988 y 1992, y se convirtió en la primera heptatleta en ganar en dos Juegos Olímpicos consecutivos. Sus mejores pruebas en el heptatlón eran el salto de longuitud (logró el récord mundial en 1987 y la medalla de oro olímpica en 1988), los 100 m vallas, los 200 m planos y el salto de altura. Muchos la consideran la mejor atleta de la historia.
